I think I understand what you are trying to say with this statement, that when people care about certain things that can cause the destruction of those things. If this is what you were trying to convey, then I agree with what your saying and think it's an interesting way to interpret the story. It was not how I immediately read the story, but I feel that it is also correct and an interesting way to look at it. But I think the wording of the statement is unclear and if it were changed around then the statement would be much easier to read and the point you are trying to get across would be easier recognize. But, the idea behind the statement was good.
